UPDATE 09/2016: Create a Bootable macOS Sierra Install Drive with DiskMaker X. With OS X El Capitan, Apple has built on many of the changes that were brought on by Yosemite. And as with previous OS X versions dating back to OS X 10.7, El Capitan is only available for install via download from the App Store. After the copy of 'Packages', 'BaseSystem.chunklist', and 'BaseSystem.dmg' is complete, you should have a bootable USB drive that can install El Capitan on a Snow Leopard machine. Just restart and hold down Option as soon as the screen turns black and don't let go until the boot loader screen appears. Step 9: Click Erase then create the disk. Step 10: Click Continue. Step 11: Enter your administrator password when requested. Step 12: Once the process is completed, click Quit. You can now eject your USB key and keep it handy for future usage. You may choose to rename the name of the drive to El Capitan instead of Yosemite.
What’s needed for a clean install on a Mac
- A backup of the disk before it’s erased. Two options are to use Duplicate (a free utility which can copy and paste an entire bootable volume), or Mac Backup Guru (a paid, fully featured backup utility with unique incremental backups capability) for that. Here is a detailed guide for the process.
